A perennial favorite, especially for little girls. Milly-Molly-Mandy is irresistible!

I have fond memories of reading this entire series aloud with my oldest kids when we first started homeschooling! They're a little slow, but we enjoyed them as short stories.

A classic, and a sweet celebration of the bustling life of NYC as well as country life in Connecticut meadows.

Animal lovers especially will adore this sweet story about a musical cricket, and his pals -- a mouse and a cat, who share many adventures together including taking in the sights of old New York. A 1961 Newberry Honor book, it features illustrations by Garth Williams and is great for young readers because “intense” animal scenes are pretty minimal. (The first in a series.)

Grown-ups always know best. Or do they? This classic handles courage and coming into one's own in a lovely, inspiring, respectful way. My boys especially loved it.

Jonathan sets out to get a large pot from his aunt for a family Christening celebration, trekking over Hemlock Mountain. At least he won’t encounter any bears … right?

FROM SARAH:

This is always my first chapter book read-aloud (or at least, it was with all six of my own kids!), but it's also a perfect choice for a developing reader. It tells the story of a young boy who saves a baby dragon, has adventures after their escape, and reunites the dragon with its family. I've yet to meet a kid who doesn't love this story.

When Elmer Elevator tells a stray cat about his dream of being able to fly, he learns of a captive dragon on Wild Island.
