Awoooooooo! Get ready for some pure delight in this episode of the Read-Aloud Revival podcast. We’re joined by the wonderful and witty author of the spunky and endearing Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place series.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
- where the idea of a governess caring for children raised by wolves came from (it turns out it’s a bit of Jane Eyre and a dash of The Jungle Book!)
- how she plots her mysterious storylines
- and Maryrose even reads (and howls) a bit!
This episode is not to be missed, and if you haven’t yet read the Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place series with your kids, you’re going to want to go grab the first by the end of the episode.

We haven’t read the Mysterious Howling and following yet. I got the first one at the library. My 10 yr old picked it up and gave up on it within the first few pages. He said it was boring. But he said the same thing about 100 Cupboards until I started reading it out loud. Then he took over and has read everything from ND Wilson that he can find!
I have tired twice to register for the 31 Day Read Aloud Challenge. I have done it on two different days. I am not getting my download from your site. Please help.I have checked my spam and its not there.
Thank you
I’ve read the first five, waiting eagerly til March 2018 for the sixth one! I only found out there were six after getting to a cliffhanger in 5! Then my daughter decided to devour them, then my husband (which is a first!) and now my 9yo is joining in. He’s up to #4 on audio after beginning last weekend. Thanks Sarah and the team for this recommendation!
I am loving this series! I am reading it with my 10 year old. As an adult I love the humor and literary awooosions. Oh and my daughter likes it too.
I think this book is fun to read. :-) Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this amazing and inspiring interview! This series is a family favorite and we especially enjoy them on audiobook. We crack up and quote these books all the time. Can you please also interview the lovely gal who reads the Incorrigible Children in audio? Katherine Kellgren.
Oh that’s a great idea, Sara! The Incorrigibles on audio is smashing!
I AM SO EXCITED for this episode! We are CRAZY big fans of Ashton Place! The audible recording is incredible. Yet they are also so fun to read aloud. You are getting the best authors alive today on this show!!
That was so fun! So she did homeschool-no wonder that part feels so spot on! We listen to these on Audible over and over at our house and there is always something freshly amusing each time I hear them. We may never finish the 6th book around here because it would be OVER, my daughter still won’t finish Harry Potter 7 after nearly a year, I may sneak both of them since I think I can handle it ;)
Between these, Harry Potter and Edith Nesbit Audible books I slip in to a
British accent a lot.
Loved listening to this!! I can’t wait to finish our current series so we can read these next.
The Incorrigible Children series has been our very favorite real-aloud series. We like to visit Bertha when we go to the zoo, and we have our very own 17 year-old Lumawoo in our family. We were heartbroken at the end of Book 5. I could barely continue reading aloud. My kids are now ages 9-19, and yes, the big kids still listen. We anxiously await book 6! Seriously. ANXIOUSLY.
I can’t wait to listen, but until I do – what age do you recommend for the Incorrigible Children series?
I would say 8 and up–older kids will enjoy the humor more I think.
