Five Children and It

Five Children and It

FROM SARAH:

Five siblings discover a sand-fairy who will grant one wish a day... so they've got to use those wishes carefully! This classic tale is a delight.

All-of-a-Kind Family

All-of-a-Kind Family

FROM SARAH:

Fun fact: this is the series that first inspired Karina Yan Glaser to write her modern Vanderbeeker series! If you'd like, pair it with the All-of-a-Kind Family Hanukkah picture book.

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

Meet the All-of-a-Kind Family. Together they share adventures that find them searching for hidden buttons while dusting Mama's front parlor and visiting with the peddlers in Papa's shop on rainy days. The girls enjoy doing everything together, especially when it involves holidays and surprises. But no one could have prepared them for the biggest surprise of all!

Little Women

Little Women

FROM SARAH:

The March sisters are each distinctive in their own way, but they band together to help their mother while their father is serving in the Civil War. We selected this book for our summer 2023 Mama Book Club pick. RAR Premium members can access the Mama Book Club Guide here.

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

Grown-up Meg, tomboyish Jo, timid Beth, and precocious Amy. The four March sisters couldn't be more different. But with their father away at war, and their mother working to support the family, they have to rely on one another. Whether they're putting on a play, forming a secret society, or celebrating Christmas, there's one thing they can't help wondering: Will Father return home safely?

The Penderwicks

The Penderwicks

FROM SARAH:

One of my tippy-top recommendations . . . if your kids haven't met the Penderwicks yet, it's time! A summer of misadventure ensues when four sisters meet a very interesting boy (and a couple of rabbits, too!) at a summer cottage in New England. Boys and girls alike enjoy this whole series. Hear Jeanne Birdsall talk about writing this series on her episode of Read-Aloud Revival. Also wonderful on audio (Audible | LibroFM).

*Note: There are a couple of instances of the Lord's name being used in vain by one of the characters.

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

This summer the Penderwick sisters have a wonderful surprise: a holiday on the grounds of a beautiful estate called Arundel. Soon they are busy discovering the summertime magic of Arundel's sprawling gardens, treasure-filled attic, tame rabbits, and the cook who makes the best gingerbread in Massachusetts.

The Penderwicks at Point Mouette

The Penderwicks at Point Mouette

FROM SARAH:

The fictional setting of Point Mouette is based on Ocean Point, near Booth Bay Harbor, in Maine. You'll probably enjoy the Penderwicks series best if you start from the beginning, but this book in particular will make you feel like you're in Maine!

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

When summer comes around, it's off to the beach for Rosalind . . . and off to Maine with Aunt Claire for the rest of the Penderwick girls, as well as their old friend, Jeffrey.

All The World

All The World

FROM SARAH:

One of my all-time favorite summer picture books. This book makes me want to go to the beach! Illustrated by Marla Frazee, who illustrated The Seven Silly Eaters.

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

Following a circle of family and friends through the course of a day from morning until night, this book affirms the importance of all things great and small in our world, from the tiniest shell on the beach, to the warmth of family connections, to the widest sunset sky.

The Penderwicks in Spring

The Penderwicks in Spring

FROM SARAH:

I recommend the whole series, but this one, book #4, is a masterpiece! RAR Families tell me the Penderwicks series remains a family favorite for all ages. And nope, it's not just for girls. My boys loved it every bit as much as their sisters. Ages 6-14 will probably enjoy them most. (Audible | LibroFM)

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

Springtime is finally arriving on Gardam Street, and there are surprises in store for each member of the family.
Some surprises are just wonderful, like neighbor Nick Geiger coming home from war. And some are ridiculous, like Batty’s new dog-walking business. Batty is saving up her dog-walking money for an extra-special surprise for her family, which she plans to present on her upcoming birthday. But when some unwelcome surprises make themselves known, the best-laid plans fall apart.

A Little More Beautiful

A Little More Beautiful

FROM SARAH:

My very first picture book, inspired by something Jeanne Birdsall (yes, THAT Jeanne Birdsall) said to me during a walk through her neighborhood in Northampton. Hear about the making of this book here and here!

FROM THE PUBLISHER:

Sly as a fox and swift as a bird, Lou Alice is determined to leave each day a little more beautiful than she found it. But when she moves away from her little house, no one in town notices she's gone. No one, that is, except a little girl, who sets out to carry on Lou Alice's work. But doing so is not enough. Can the girl find a way of her own to make the world a little more beautiful?
