RAR #15 Poetry Read-Alouds for Parents Who Are Intimidated by Poetry

Caroline Starr Rose has written entire books in verse. Now don’t be intimidated. Her book, May B, has been described as part Hatchet, part Little House on the Prairie, and part Out of the Dust.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • her books, of course!
  • how to get started with poetry even if it’s as intimidating to you as it is to me
  • her booklist (a-mazing!) I can’t believe how many of Caroline’s favorite books I hadn’t heard of before

  1. This one was so great! I shy away from poetry but this at least has made me pause. I might start with some of Caroline’s books – listening to her read that section made me wish for more! Thank you so much for this podcast.

  2. I loved this post it was very inspiring as are all of them so far ( still in the catch up faze). And I love the great books Caroline Starr Rose suggested. Thank you for what you have created.

  3. I have also found Shel Silverstein to be easy to read out loud. His poems are so funny and the pictures that go along with them help reveal what is going on.

Also, William Steig’s Shrek is in verse, that is quite hidden unless you are paying attention. And the dialogue between Shrek and his princess is totally in verse and is so funny!

I love the rhythm of the things written in verse. Fun to find more!

    1. I was so excited when Ms. Rose said how much she loved The Count of Monte Cristo!!! I just experienced that book for the first time last year when I borrowed the audio CD from my library, and I just borrowed it again this week! I’m on CD 3 and it’s just as good as I remembered!!

  4. I’m not seeing the link for the Laura Ingalls Wilder 3 vol. journals that Caroline referenced. And I didn’t find anything that I was certain was what she meant when I checked Amazon. Any chance of getting that info here?

Thank you for another great podcast. I have so enjoyed every single one, and always look forward to the next one. I’d love one specifically geared for older high school kids. My oldest daughter made me quit our read-alouds a couple years ago because she decided she was too old. (And my falling asleep while I read probably didn’t help either! ;) Not because I didn’t love the book, but because of severe sleep deprivation) Anyway, when my kids ask me what I want for Mother’s Day in May, my (brilliant!) plan is to ask them to give me ONE MORE Read-Aloud year before they leave home for college and while we’re all still home together.

    1. Oh! I forgot to tell you, I always link your new podcast to our local homeschool group on Facebook to share the great and wonderful conversations!

  5. I just love your podcasts. I listen to many podcasts actually, but I definitely get most excited to see that I have one of yours waiting for me to listen to. I always learn so much and am so encouraged. Unfortunately, because of you, my reading list is getting out of control! Haha. Even through the fuzzy connection of this one it was so worth the listen and very encouraging. Keep going.

  6. Thank you! I enjoyed listening to this last night as I was doing dishes. Sarah, I have been binge-listening to all of your podcast for the last week or so, and it has been incredibly helpful and enjoyable.

  7. Ah! I just love it when there is a new episode. I admit it, I’m giddy. I’ve followed Caroline Starr Rose’s blog at least for a year now, perhaps two, and enjoyed her book May B. This was so fun to listen to, and also to glean from that great list of books. ;)
