RAR #16: Start a Reading Streak!

I never do this – record a podcast episode on the fly just because I’m so excited I can’t help myself. :) But today is the last day of 2014 and I want to make sure we head into 2015 and make it count by forming deep and meaningful connections with our kids.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • how you can start a reading streak in your home TODAY
  • how this one step will make a difference in your family for the whole year through
  • how it really can be easy (pinkie swear!) to read-aloud each day

  1. You are awesome Sarah!! I am a big fan! So blessed to have found this podcast and blog. Thank you so much for all of your efforts. I just started your book and I almost started crying…because finally I feel validated for the feelings I have been having about homeschooling. I feel like you wrote that book just for me! xo

  2. There is SO much here since I just found you. We just started a new month, I’m going to take the challenge! I was so drawn in by your beautiful, generous smile and I can’t wait to go through all the resources you have here. Thank you!

  3. You totally rock, Sarah! I recently came across your site through one of the many other blogs that I read (I cannot remember which one…sorry). I LOVE THESE PODCASTS. Unfortunately, I went through them all in less than a week and now I am done…sad face.
I grew up in a house w/o books. I have homeschooled my two adult children all the way through high school and one of them is a voracious reader (the girl). I now have my last child (6), who started reading at 4 1/2, to school and I am so excited to do it all again. Weird? I wholeheartedly believe that she read early because I read to her all day long, every day. I never taught her, she just started on her own. It really works.
Thank you for all of your hard work; you have blessed many people!
    Kelly

  4. We are in! Boy-7, boy-5, girl-3 and girl-1. We do struggle because my oldest would read allll day with Mom, but the youngest gets bored quickly. I’m excited to start reading every day!

  5. Hey, Sarah!
I am new here at RAR, which every time I see that abbreviation I have to internally roar like a tiger, just fyi :) I am loving your podcast and I am in for the Reading Streak! Thank you :)

  6. We’re in! Actually we have started TWO streaks. In the morning we mark off one calendar after having read two chapters in the Old Testament and one in the New Testament (with the goal of reading through the entire Bible in a year). Before bed we mark off a second calendar after having read a chapter of good fiction. It has been a wonderful experience of family fellowship thus far, and we all plan to keep it going! Thanks for the inspiration and for the calendars!!!

  7. Sarah, you’re famous! I was reading s blog I like, Money Saving Mom and she mentioned you. And to think I knew you when ; ). I love reading aloud to my kids. We’re working on the wizard of oz series :)

  8. count me in and i am actually taping the calendar to the fridge to encourage my husband to read to the kids for 5 min each day!

  9. Hooray!! Sounds great to me. I’m in! Too bad I only read to my littles (1, 3 and 6) yesterday, and not to my bigger kids (9 and 12). :-(

But today is a new day, and I’ll make sure I read to the bigger ones today too!

  10. We are beginning our Streak today! Thank you for a reminder to do something that has enriched our lives so much over the year. We’ve let it slide since the kids have become older and into media and games . . . uggghh. Read Aloud Revival, here we come!

  11. Definitely starting a reading streak in January. Hopefully on Jan 5.
I am on my last child at home…he is 15 and I am determined to fill his chest full of treasures while I still can!

  12. I LOVE the idea! I need more enforcement in what to read with all my kids. For now I am reading to each child apart … Six of them and only me one and this is fun, but tiring for me… The art of choosing the right book for my family will be something to master for me.
    Happy New Year, dear ladies!

  13. We are ON for the streak! We had a beautiful Advent season with a different picture book each day and candles! No one wants to quit now, so we started on another lovely book today! Thanks for the calendar!

  14. I’m so excited about a reading streak. My mama heart aches to be more intentional with my children. My kiddos have always been read to, and now we are beginning the reading tradition with our first grandlittle. Thank you Sarah, and may your efforts be truly blessed.

  15. I recently posted an article about this on my blog. After I heard about The Reading Promise here, I promptly ordered it and devoured it. We have a serious family culture of reading but having an official Streak makes us very intentional. Ours began Thanksgiving Day and we plan to continue and spread the word as well.

  16. I’m in. Either my husband or I read aloud to our older two children every day, but I’d like to change two aspects of this in the new year: I want to read aloud every day, which will make my husband’s reading is extra and awesome, not a stop-gap, and I want us both to prioritize reading to the baby (toddler), despite his less than wonderful interest in books. Thanks for clarifying a challenge that I’ve been contemplating for some time.

  17. I’m so excited to see the Read Aloud Revival get started! I’m very passionate about family read alouds regardless of the age of your kiddos. When I still had high schoolers at home and would be reading to the younger children, soon they would surface from their corners of the house and be sitting at my feet listening too. The biggest kick is my dh, who often times ask me to read aloud “from that book”. One summer, we made it a point to turn off the TV in the evening so I could read aloud. We all have fond memories :)

Blessings to you in your endeavor,
    Melissa

  18. I’m in. Reading aloud is the thing I most want to do in our homeschool, and it seems to be the thing least likely to get done.
I think the calendar will help. My children will keep me accountable! :) Plus, my competitive side likes the concept of a reading streak. Thank you and happy new year!

  19. The Lambs are in! My 9yo goes NUTS when we don’t get a chance to read! We don’t always make it, but we do give it an earnest effort. Here’s the inspiration to help us! This is the perfect 2015 goal!

  20. Our family of 3-yog, 8-yog, and 11-yob are in. Very easy to do this on school days but falls off the radar on weekends and daddy’s day off. But we will read at least 5 minutes for those days. But I’ve been personally reading up a storm and cannot wait to share what I’ve been reading with the kids. Fortunately they all like books and have their own reading time each day just because. But I love to read to them and haven’t in awhile. Things just get so busy sometimes and my focus gets wonky.

  21. I found your podcasts on Pinterest just a few days ago. I am so excited about your message to parents and how they should read to their children. I have already listened to all of your podcasts and can’t wait to share this resource with the parents of all my third grade students. Thank you so much!

  22. We are going to give the Streak a Try. We read aloud most days but weekends are usually where were fall apart. This is a great goal for the coming year, to read aloud every day even weekends!
