A story reminiscent of novels such as Number the Stars and Snow Treasure, this story unfolds in the German-occupied Netherlands during World War II. Piet dreams of completing the same skating race as his hero, Pim Mulier, who was the first to skate the Elfstedentocht (a famous race that goes through eleven towns along frozen canals). Piet is now called upon to undertake the race of his life–rescuing two children in dangerous circumstances. A longer picture book for multiple sittings, this is an inspiring story of courage!

In 1941 Piet, a young Dutch boy from Sluis, gets the assignment of a lifetime: He must skate along the frozen canals of the Netherlands and across the Belgian border, in order to guide two neighborhood children to their aunt's house in Brugge, where the children will remain for the duration of World War II. Their father has been taken by German soldiers, and the children are no longer safe in Sluis -- but the journey with Piet, past soldiers and enemies, is fraught with danger.
