I just finished reading “Deadly Cure” by Lawrence Goldstone. I can not believe the multiple typos, grammar and punctuation errors there are in this book. If I were Mr. Goldstone, I would be totally embarrassed with this publication. I read 3-5 books a week and I usually find errors in every one of them. In my opinion, a proof reader should be employed to review before any book is published. It’s also my opinion that these books are a representation of the authors and their credibility. This book is absolutely the worst that I have ever seen.

I just listened to this podcast last night and I am so inspired! My children (9 & 4) and I read aloud several books each day as part of the Ambleside Online curriculum, they narrate, and we have great conversations. But we’ve never tried this level of literary analysis and now I’m looking forward to becoming a Book Detective with them and sharing another level of my love for reading. I’ve ordered the book from the library and cannot wait to dive in. I also checked out the blog links you gave and am in love with what those lovely ladies are doing in their book club! I’ve wanted to start a book club for a long time but was at a loss for exactly how I wanted it to run. I think I’ve found my answer! Thanks for all the great podcasts!
Hi, I ‘m sorry to reply here regarding another podcast but I couldn’t tell how to reply to Ludwig’s shakespeare podcast page. I saw where other listeners commented about susan wise bauer’s article about the book and that you stated you would talk to Ludwig about it and then share back. I wondered if you had any comments to share after having time to read over the article and possibly speak with him? I was going to order the book today after listening to the podcast, but now I’m feeling sort of torn. I know ultimately it falls to our own personal decision, but I was very interested in hearing your thoughts. thanks :-)

I never did ask Ken about it. I looked up the selection that Susan Wise Bauer mentions in that article and I quite agree with her that it is not a good selection for memorization.
However, I think the book is still invaluable (and I don’t think he intended for young children to get that far in the book, so they wouldn’t have run up against that particular passage. The book is for a whole life of memorizing Shakespeare- not for just one year…)
The methods for how to memorize and background information he gives for each of the plays is really very helpful. As I go along, if there are selections I’m not excited about memorizing, we’ll just choose another. A quick online search of “popular passages from Hamlet” or whatever would probably do the trick. :)
If you feel good about how to memorize Shakespeare and don’t need help with the storylines, I’d say you definitely don’t need the book. I do like it, though, even though I’ll very likely be substituting some of the passages he suggests. Hope that’s helpful?
Absolutely! Thats very helpful, and you were so kind to reply so quickly! Thank you! I do agree though that nothing should replace the importance of memorizing Scripture with our children. That is what will help them best for a lifetime, not Shakespeare or anything else. Although I do hope to memorize some Shakespeare with my children! :-) I just found your site through “Schole Sisters” and have already been so encouraged! Thank You! :-)
