ON TIME MANAGEMENT
ON BOOKS & READING
What kind of homeschooler are you?
If I had to put a label on us, I’d say we’re relaxed, classical, Charlotte Mason. Ish. ;) I think it’s pretty important to just be who you are and not overthink methods or philosophies so much that you forget that your kids are right in front of you!
I often make that mistake myself. I wrote my heart on homeschooling in Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler’s Guide to Unshakable Peace. All the reader-favorite posts on homeschooling are collected here.
Which curriculum do you use?
It depends. I don’t think which curriculum you choose matters all that much. So much hinges on how we interact with our kids- how often we smile, how much our kids feel like we enjoy being with them.
It’s so much more important to me that my kids feel seen, heard, loved, and rooted for. Curriculum matters less than relationship. That said, you can get the best picture of what we use at my How We Homeschool video series.
Do you participate in a homeschooling co-op? Is it a CC group?
I do participate in a local co-op; it’s not a CC group.
Are you going to homeschool through high school?
Yep! We’ve currently got two who are homeschooling high school. It’s the best.
How on earth do you have time to do everything you’re doing?
I don’t do it all. You know that right?
I have a team (and an a-mazing husband) that helps me run the Read-Aloud Revival. A good thing to keep in mind as you’re wandering around online is that if it looks like it’s more than one lady could possibly pull off, it probably is.
Also: my house is often messy. And I never, ever, ever do anything that could be posted to Pinterest. ;) We all make trade-offs, I just try to make mine as intentionally as possible.
How do you keep your house clean?
I don’t! ;) Now don’t you feel better?
We do some basic tidying/blitzing to keep things more or less orderly, but I’m not overly concerned with it.
Here’s the thing- I have found that nourishing relationships with my family and doing things that renew and re-energize (like going for a walk through the woods, playing a family board game, or taking some time to read a book or write a blog post) do far more for my sense of peace than having all of the laundry folded and put away.
Do your kids read twaddle?
Yes. I’m of the mind that when they are in fluency stage, we want them to read a lot; sometimes they like to fill up on twaddly stuff like those horrid Disney fairy books or the like- I’m okay with that. As long as the books are not damaging their moral imagination, I have found that such reading binges are usually short-lived phases.
I do try to choose the best stuff to read aloud. That has helped my kids develop a taste for really good literature, so when they do occasionally binge on lighter stuff, they know deep in their bones that there’s a difference.
What are your favorite books?
I’m glad you asked- I love talking about books! You can find our favorites here.
Have you always been Catholic?
Nope. I was raised in an evangelical home (my dad is a pastor) and converted to Catholicism at the age of 22.
Here’s the reader’s digest version of what happened: Andy and I married when I was 19, and I desperately wanted my new husband to ditch his Catholic faith and come to my large evangelical non-denominational church. I could quote scripture and sling around my evangelical apologetics like a pro. Even though I “won” every debate, he wouldn’t budge- the man wouldn’t let go of his Catholic faith, even though he couldn’t really articulate why that was.
I spent the next couple of years devouring books on theology, and entered the Church fully at the Easter vigil of 2004. What a blessing of riches to be wrapped up in the fullness of the faith- the Catholic Church is the home my soul was longing for. All glory to God.
Will you pray for me?
Of course! If you send me your prayer request, I will always commit to praying specifically for you.
Can I write a guest post for your site?
No, I’m sorry. We’re not accepting unsolicited guest posts at this time.
I need some help with my blog. Can I bounce some ideas off of you?
How about I send you to my favorite spots for blogging help instead?
My best recommendation is just to learn all you can by listening to podcasts, reading blogs, and doing as much research as possible. It all adds up over time!
Will you review my book?
We receive quite a lot of books for review. Because of that, we’re unable to read or review them all, but you may certainly send yours to the address on this page.
Can I sponsor or advertise on your blog or podcast?
Nope, sorry. We don’t currently run any sponsored content/ads on the website or podcast.
Can I book you to speak at my event?
My schedule is pretty full, but you can feel free to check out my speaking page for more information.
